As part of the ROLL Models programme by Goodpush Alliance (Goodpush | Roll Models), and supported through a ROLL Models seed grant, this project used skateboarding as a tool for inclusion, empowerment and community building. Over the course of a year, the ROLL Model project brought skateboarding into Brussels neighbourhoods—particularly Molenbeek and Anderlecht—where access to sport and creative spaces is limited. Through free, recurring skate initiations, it created low-threshold entry points for young people to step on a board, try, fail and progress in a supportive environment.
As part of the project, we built a miniramp—an open, safe and cost-free space where anyone could come to practice, regardless of skill level. Combined with shared equipment, local pop-up spots and a growing community around each location, the project helped remove financial and social barriers while activating public space in a new way. Every Sunday, we met with kids in these neighbourhoods: just show up, learn, skate and have fun with your friends—at your local spot.
We also brought one of our Hop On Hop Off sessions to these locations, blending all skate levels and creating space for inspiration, new connections, new faces and new tricks. Over time, we saw skills grow, confidence build and strong engagement from local residents. Kids began to take ownership of their space, turning familiar streets into places of expression, movement and connection—making skateboarding a vehicle for belonging and community.
